Uncovering a new therapeutic area for an existing medication with a unique mechanism of action

SITUATION

As part of life cycle management activities for a successful medication, our client is exploring the potential of several new indications for incremental clinical trial investment.

One of these indications is an ultra-rare disease that affects several organ systems and features poorly defined diagnostic and treatment guidelines.

APPROACH

  • Collect and synthesize internal information from medical affairs, precision medicine, competitive intelligence and forecasting cross-functional teams

  • Supplement existing information with extensive desk research leveraging some 25 different resources

  • Execute qualitative research (physician IDIs) to clarify information gaps that remained

RESULTS

The research:

  • Defined the disease as well as unmet treatment needs and provided estimates of market size/likely growth

  • Outlined a complicated origination, referral, diagnostic and treatment path including the outlining HCP roles, patient experiences and payor perceptions

  • Incorporated competitive intelligence and forecasting estimates

IMPACT

Client used the research to:

  • Present disease area viability for additional investment

  • Provide insights to inform initial disease area strategy

  • Introduce the disease, provide education to cross-functional stakeholders, global affiliates
